The 3,500 year old Hittite lake has dried up in Turkiye from Onur Türk's blog

Located in the city of Sivas, which has hosted many civilizations throughout history, the Hittite Suppitassu Lake has completely dried up.

The lake, which the Hittite king used to welcome spring and purify himself 3,500 years ago, succumbed to climatic changes.

Lake Suppitassu, located near the ancient city of Sarissa and once fascinated everyone with its view, has been covered with reeds. Lake Suppitassu, which was studied by German scientists and once had a depth of approximately 7 meters, is expected to fill with water again with rainfall.

“It has a history of 3,500 years”

Providing information about Lake Suppitassu, Hüseyin Boran said, “This lake was found after the Sarissa excavations that started in 1977. There was a temple in Lake Suppitassu and festivals were held.

When the king comes here from Corum, he comes here before stopping by the city. It has a history of 3,500 years. The king first comes here, participates in the festivities, and then goes down to the city. The king's throne is also there. There is also a temple on a dominant hill. When he goes there, he sees the whole district. There were guardhouses opposite. It disappeared over time.

The Germans came while the excavation was being done. They entered with a boat and said it was 6.5 meters deep. This place dried up without an owner or maintenance. We want Sarissa and this lake to be opened to tourism," he said.
